Head lice and African American hair

There was a rash of lice going around the school a few weeks back and thankfully it didn’t get to the nursery. The other day I was speaking to one of the mothers and she said, “You didn’t have a problem, right?” No, I said, why? “Because African American hair doesn’t get lice.” She thought maybe it was the oils we use in their hair.

But I went online and sure enough African American kids do get hair lice, albeit less frequently than others. Thank goodness we didn’t get lice because the true difference is that taking care of Tin’s hair is sometimes akin to torture the way he behaves when I’m conditioning and picking it out. I can only image little African American girls and their long, thick, wavy hair and having to delouse one of them – oh no.
